Start of new cable car - experience on Monte Tamaro

Alpine Seilbahnen
At Monte Tamaro, the adventure and leisure mountain in Switzerland’s Canton of Ticino, a new cable car era has just begun. With the opening of the new 8-seater gondola lift, the operators are setting new standards with state-of-the-art transport technology, exclusive equipment, and a sustainable energy supply. The modernization offensive contributes to making the diverse mountain experiences of this popular summer destination even more relaxed and conveniently accessible.

We relied on our proven strengths to build the new ropeway: Design, precision craftsmanship and technological innovation. The 8-seater panoramic gondolas designed by Studio F. A. Porsche were used on Monte Tamaro, guaranteeing maximum comfort and incomparable views of the Ticino mountains. Barrier-free entrances and optimized ventilation also enhance the travel experience
Particular attention is paid to harmonious integration into the landscape. To preserve the natural scenery, the number of towers was significantly reduced. Maximum efficiency was also a priority when planning the particularly lean stations. The drive system is located in the basement of the top station, which significantly reduces the noise level.
In the station area, an electrically operated carousel with tire conveyor ensures that the speed can be flexibly adjusted when boarding. This allows the cabins to slow down, stop or or even be grouped into convoys. In addition, the mountain station was positioned closer to the Alpe Foppa restaurant and the cable car route was adjusted accordingly to enable an even more direct connection in future.

Clear commitment to sustainability and efficiency
The operator Monte Tamaro SA and we attached great importance to environmentally friendly and sustainable implementation right from the project planning stage. These environmental measures were already welcomed and recognized by the authorities during the approval phase.

Thanks to the modern ropeway system and the comprehensive renewal of all technical and structural infrastructure, significant energy savings can be achieved.Together with a large-scale photovoltaic system installed on the roof of the new bottomstation, the gondola lift is largely self-sufficient in its energy supply.

Moreover, thanks to careful planning, high-quality architecture, and selected materials, the new gondola lift blends harmoniously into the landscape and has a positive impact on the overall scenery.

Powerful and Elegant Access to the Mountain World
The new 8-seater gondola lift covers a distance of around 2.5 kilometers and is equipped with 34 cabins. This means that up to 800 people can be transported per hour with a journey time of around ten minutes. With the opening of this state-of-the-art installation, Monte Tamaro is once again setting new benchmarks after more than 50 years of company history – offering visitors a gondola ride that unites speed, comfort, design, and sustainability.

The entirely privately financed project is supported by the main shareholder Luca Cattaneo and Banca Stato. The aim of this investment is to strengthen Monte Tamaro as an attractive excursion destination in the long term and to open it at weekends in winter and during the Ticino school vacations. "The renewal of the gondola lift marks a milestone for Monte Tamaro SA. After my five years with Bartholet, it is of great personal importance to me to have realized this project together with a company that meets the highest quality standards and offers customized solutions," explains Nicola Cattaneo, Managing Director of Monte Tamaro SA.

Markus Menzi also emphasizes the excellent collaboration on this "milestone project": "We are proud to have contributed our technology and expertise to the further development of Monte Tamaro. For us as a company from the Alpine region, the close cooperation with Monte Tamaro SA and the realization of this project in Switzerland are of great significance."

This was already evident during the extensive construction work, when the 2024 summer season could be carried out without any major disruptions for guests. Thanks to efficient planning and tight time management, the restrictions were reduced to a minimum so that the operation of the popular excursion destination could be maintained while preparations for the next generation of gondolas were underway.

With the new 8-seater gondola lift from us, Monte Tamaro is now entering a new era and increasing its appeal in addition to the existing highlights - from the rope park to the toboggan run and the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli designed by Mario Botta.
