Polymechanic

Tasks and Responsibilities

Polymechanics manufacture tools, equipment components and production fixtures. They program and operate machines, monitor production processes, commission machinery and equipment, and carry out maintenance work. Polymechanics are involved in the development, manufacture and assembly of tools, components or complete production systems. Depending on the company, area of responsibility and level of experience, they perform a wide range of different tasks.

One of the core activities of polymechanics is manufacturing. They complete orders from start to finish. Using metals such as steel, stainless steel or aluminium, as well as plastics or composite materials, they produce tools, components or production systems. In single-part production or prototype construction, they work manually on lathes, milling, drilling and grinding machines. In most cases, however, they use computer-controlled machines. These are programmed according to design drawings, including the definition of machining steps. Polymechanics select the required tools, set up the machines and carry out test runs. Once everything is precisely adjusted, production is started and closely monitored. If deviations occur, they stop the machines and correct the settings. Finally, they check the quality of the workpieces using highly precise measuring and testing instruments.

In coordination with their team as well as with engineers, polymechanics develop design solutions. Using CAD software, they create 3D drawings and technical documentation. In doing so, they consider not only technical requirements but also cost-effective solutions for production processes. Further areas of responsibility include the assembly and commissioning of devices, machines and systems, often directly at the customer’s site. Together with other specialists, they assemble mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical components into a fully functional system. During commissioning, they carry out tests, make adjustments and instruct customers on operation.

Polymechanics are also responsible for maintenance and repair work. They repair or replace defective machine parts and carry out servicing tasks. In some fields, they also perform maintenance work on aircraft and helicopters. Safety regulations are strictly observed at all times: for example, they wear protective gloves and safety glasses. They protect their own health and the environment by disposing of or recycling waste materials such as used oil, cooling water or metal chips in a proper manner.
