Modern Ropeway Technology Meets Cultural Heritage: The 8-Passenger Gondola Lift in Kunming, China
The provincial capital of Kunming is one of the most popular travel destinations in southwestern China. A modern 8-passenger detachable gondola lift is currently being built here to replace an existing 2-seat chairlift. The new installation provides access to one of the region’s most renowned attractions: the spectacular Xishan Scenic Area, offering panoramic views of Dianchi Lake and the famous Longmen Grottoes.
The significance of this site is reflected in a Chinese proverb: «Whoever has not climbed Xishan has not truly arrived in Kunming, and whoever has not visited Longmen has visited Xishan in vain.»
The Longmen Grottoes are among the most impressive cultural landmarks in Yunnan Province. Over generations, Taoist monks, scholars, and craftsmen created an extraordinary ensemble of grottoes, sculptures, and reliefs along the steep cliff faces. Today, the site is considered one of the region’s most important cultural monuments.
Here, modern ropeway technology meets centuries-old tradition: the lower terminal station has been integrated into a building designed in traditional Chinese architectural style and blends harmoniously into the historic surroundings. The result is a unique connection between cultural heritage and contemporary mobility.
The approximately 1,076-metre-long installation will operate with 33 gondola cabins and achieve a transport capacity of up to 2,000 passengers per hour. Construction work has also progressed significantly: the mechanical installation as well as the completion of the lower and upper stations have been finalized. Rope splicing is scheduled for October, while electrical wiring and commissioning are planned to be completed by the end of November. Official acceptance by the authorities is scheduled for mid-December.
