Milestone achieved in Varanasi
The rope splicing works for the first section of the ropeway in Varanasi – from Cantt Main Station via the Vidya Peeth intermediate station to Yatra – have been successfully completed. The first test runs have already taken place. At the same time, the first towers for the second section have been erected. This section, which also includes an intermediate station, will lead to the Godowlia Chowk temple district near the Ganges. As India’s first urban ropeway, the project will significantly ease heavy traffic in Varanasi and provide the city with a modern and efficient mobility solution.
Further project highlights
The first cabins have already arrived on site. The towers in the area of the first two sections have been almost completely installed. The ropeway will reach a total length of 3660 metres and transport up to 3000 passengers per hour in each direction. Passengers will be safely transported over Varanasi in modern panoramic cabins designed by Studio F. A. Porsche. Each of the nearly 150 cabins accommodates ten passengers and operates at a speed of six metres per second.
Varanasi – a city with history
The project is particularly noteworthy as it is being realised in Varanasi, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. For thousands of years, Varanasi has been an important place of pilgrimage and symbolises culture, history and spirituality in India.
Outlook
The ropeway system will not only relieve traffic congestion in Varanasi, but also improve connections to key urban areas and offer passengers an innovative transport experience.
