Fixed-Grip 4-Seater Chairlift Successfully Opened in Ushuaia
Located in southern Argentina between the Andes, impressive glaciers and the South Pacific Ocean, Ushuaia is known as “La ciudad del fin del mundo” – the city at the end of the world. It is also the site of our latest project.
In June 2026, the fixed-grip 4-seater chairlift was successfully commissioned. The installation will provide reliable access to the ski area and offer comfortable transportation for visitors in this remote region.
In the initial operating stage, 126 chairs are in service, providing a transport capacity of 1,450 passengers per hour. Following the final expansion phase, the total number of chairs will increase to 139, raising the capacity to 1,600 passengers per hour.
While the summer season begins in Switzerland, winter is underway in the Southern Hemisphere. The chairlift was therefore commissioned just in time for the start of the local ski season, creating ideal conditions for successful operation.
For the project team from Switzerland, working in Ushuaia presented a unique challenge. The journey takes approximately 30 hours and highlights both the international nature of the project and the commitment required to successfully deliver ropeway installations around the world.
In addition to the technical requirements, logistics posed a significant challenge. Transporting the equipment to the site took approximately eight weeks, while parts of the construction site were accessible only by off-road vehicles.
With a line length of approximately 1.4 kilometres and a vertical rise of more than 200 metres, the installation connects the lower and upper stations in just under 11 minutes.
